Onboarding new joiners

Let new engineers and managers learn why the system works the way it does, without waiting on colleagues.

Getting a new hire fully productive can take as long as six months, and knowledge workers lose about 5.3 hours a week waiting for information from colleagues (Panopto). Much of that waiting is for one kind of answer: “why does it work this way?”

What a new joiner can do

  • Ask why a rule exists and get the owner’s approved answer, with the source.
  • See which rules in their area are Unknown or Stale, before they rely on them.
  • Find who owns a rule, and ask the right person the first time.
  • Read the timeline of a rule: what changed, when, and who decided.

What a manager can do

  • Point a new joiner at their area’s rules instead of a stale wiki.
  • See which questions new joiners ask most, which shows where the memory is thin.

Example

New joiner: Why do we hold every order above ₹50,000 for a manual check? It slows customers down.

AppThentic: Risk added it after large refunds went to brand-new accounts. Every refund above ₹50,000 gets a person’s review first. Approved by the Head of Risk, 21 Jun 2026. It is due for a check: fraud losses on new accounts have not been reviewed since.
